Sunday Night Reflections

When the Japanese mend broken objects,
they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold.
They believe that when something's suffered damage and has a history,
it becomes all the more beautiful.

  1. I'm sure that the bowl was lovely before the repair but I think it is beautiful afterwards.

  2. I have a beautiful bowl my mom bought in about 1950 from an antique shop in Japan, and it has hand-cut carpenter staples all along a break that split the bowl into two pieces, probably during firing. The repair is beautiful, though I don't think there is gold there, The artist-painted porcelain was so valued that the repairs didn't detract at all. Love your photo!

  3. Click on the picture of the bowl and it will take you to a website where it talks about the staple repair. I found all of this so interesting. The repaired beauty of a bowl can be said for a life too :)
